Anya Taylor-Joy Promises THE NEW MUTANTS Delay & Reshoots Will Be Worth It
The New Mutants, directed by Josh Boone, was one of the most hotly anticipated horror movies of 2018—right up until it was suddenly given a 19-month postponement (it’s currently slated for August 2, 2019)! The delay was in order to conduct significant reshoots and it was a confusing move, as the film had already gotten rave reviews from test audiences.
Still, New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Thoroughbreds) recent spoke to the folks at Collider, where she promised the film will be worth the wait, insisting the reshoots are a good thing.
“I think we’re making the movie that we set out to make, in the beginning. That’s what we’re going to end up delivering to people. It feels like the movie we all signed up to do, which is good.”
She went on to talk about her character in the film, Illyana (aka Magik), with genuine enthusiasm:
“I absolutely adore her, and getting to play her is super fun because she’s sassy and Russian and a little bit psycho. She’s just so much fun to play. And I don’t find [the delay] frustrating because when the film comes out, we want it to be something that will make the fans truly happy. Taking the time to do it, whilst people might find it a little bit frustrating to wait for it, when we deliver it, it’s going to be fantastic. That’s the most important thing.”
For those who haven’t been following The New Mutants since production was first announced, it’s worth mentioning that what 20th Century Fox originally promised was a genuine horror film set in a comic-book universe, something that hasn’t been pulled off successfully (in my opinion) since the Blade trilogy. If they deliver the goods, it most certainly will have been worth the wait.
If The New Mutants turns out to be watered down, however, it’ll be a slap in the face. No one needs another PG-13 rated superhero movie that tip-toes up to the border of horror territory without having the balls to cross the line.
While we wait for a new trailer, you can check out the synopsis and trailer for Taylor-Joy’s next feature film, Glass (a sequel to 2016’s Split) directed by M. Night Shyamalan, arriving in US theaters January 18th, below.
Synopsis:
M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
