Within Kicks Off inaugural FRIGHT FEST COLLECTION with Virtual Reality Nightmares
Though the technology is still evolving, even old-school horror fans can’t argue the fact that Virtual Reality is the wave of the future. The format has already made serious inroads into video games, but intrepid filmmakers are working on truly immersive, cinematic nightmares.
To that end, the folks at Within have just released a slew of chilling VR experiences certain to enhance your Halloween season exponentially. Here’s the full scoop from yesterday’s press release:
Buckle up for 31 days of the most terrifying experiences in virtual reality as WITHIN kicks off its inaugural Fright Fest Collection, October 3, with eight ghoulish experiences, including five app premieres and more to come each Wednesday as the scariest month of the year unfurls.
First up: “The Caretaker,” created by Jacob Wasserman, Adam Donald, and Ant Gentile of Hidden Content. This horrific app premiere follows the mysterious occurrences at a strange hotel when a couple arrives to wait for a mechanic after their car breaks down on a cold winter night.
Next comes, “An Obituary,” created by Jean Yoon, Kuk-seok Yang, and Jin-hee Kim. Another app premiere, the experience charts the unsettling course of a funeral when the man attending realizes he is the sole mourner alongside the deceased’s grieving mother. Why is there nobody else in the village?
“11:57,” is another WITHIN app premiere—a first-person POV nightmare in which you are strapped to a chair in a dark cave. The experience revolves around your every move but may leave you cowering under your bed.
The week before Halloween will bring the launch of “Portal,” a 360-degree, first-person experience of a Spanish witches’ seance, created by Futura VR Studio in Barcelona, and outfitted with enhanced spatial sound design for maximum immersive spookiness.
Also on tap: “Dinner Party,” the pilot episode of a suspenseful new anthology series called, “The Incident,” which takes viewers on immersive journeys of actual supernatural events. The first installment is a 3D virtual-reality experience based on the fantastic story of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who reported the first nationally known story of a UFO abduction in 1961. Unable to reconcile conflicting memories of the event, the Hill’s sought hypnosis, recordings of which they shared with friends at a dinner party to conflicting effect.
Fan favorites from WITHIN’s archives complete the initial offerings of the Fright Fest Collection, including Greg Nicotero’s “The Walking Dead,” which follows the series’ sadistic supervillain, Negan, as he brutally slices and dices his way out of a hungry horde of walkers.
AMC’s “The Terror” explores the minds of a crew of lost sailors inside a doomed ship; and “Sergeant James,” created by Alexandre Perez, plumbs the depths of the quintessential childhood nightmare as it asks the question, “What’s under Leo’s bed?”
Additional content will be announced throughout the month and can be found at www.with.in.
