The Best Horror Movies Streaming Now on Netflix

Last updated: September 5, 2024

The Netflix list is very light on the genre titles this September, which is fine. It will give people time to catch up on overlooked titles in their horror library like His House, Dead Boy Detectives (another show canceled way too soon), and the recently added Interview with the Vampire. The app has been quietly collecting things of note but not advertising them, which is why so many international genre titles live there but have not found their audience. So, while this September lineup leaves a lot to be desired, there is still plenty of stuff that deserves our attention while we are still subscribed to the app. Check out the 5 titles the streamer is acquiring that are making me excited to turn my TV on.

American Gangster (dir. Ridley Scott)

A cop tries to take down Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas in this film based on real-life events. I hope it is not a secret that I enjoy some Denzel Washington with my oxygen. However, he is joined by Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and RZA for this biographical thriller. I know many of us see the two-hour and forty-minute runtime and immediately start trying to recall what Ridley Scott era we were living in in 2007. However, I hope you will make time for it because if nothing else the performances are outstanding. It might also lead you to research Frank Lucas because he was a character indeed.

Jaws (dir. Steven Spielberg)

A killer shark starts eating the locals of a Cape Cod beach community. Not only is Jaws required summer viewing, but it is one of the movies that keeps many of us out of the water to this day. This is easily one of the most beloved movies in the Steven Spielberg starter pack. However, none of that is the reason it is in my top picks for this month. It is here because Netflix is getting the first three Jaws titles this month, and I have only seen the first one. I figured I needed to sound the alarm so we could watch the first films in order on one app. Please tell everybody because that is not something we see often in the streaming streets.

The Perfect Couple (dir. Susanne Bier)

When a body is discovered in the Nantucket Harbor hours before a wedding, everyone in the wedding party becomes a suspect. I usually ask the happy couple if there will be an open bar. However, now I think I should start asking if they suspect murder will also be part of the festivities. More importantly, I love a Nicole Kidman limited series. Big Little Lies became my whole personality, and I binged The Undoing so fast I got dizzy. So, I was already planning to check this out before I realized the rest of the cast is also lit. Kidman is joined by Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Michael Beach, and Liev Schreiber. So, this Netflix mystery will be how I spend my weekend, and I will see the rest of you on Monday. I am also happy to see Kidman and Susanne Bier work together again after The Undoing.

Stand by Me (dir. Rob Reiner)

A writer shares the story of how he and a group of friends journeyed to find the body of a missing boy in their youth. No one captures childhood adventures quite like Stephen King. This morbid coming-of-age tale is based on Uncle Stephen’s novella The Body. It also has the most 80s cast you will ever see as the film stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland. If you are searching for belated Labor Day titles to watch, then Stand By Me is your movie. Which also makes it another title for your end-of-summer watch list

Uglies (dir. McG)

In a dystopian world, everyone gets operations to remove physical differences and make everyone pretty. Uglies is based on Scott Westerfeld’s YA book of the same name. I am intrigued by the premise, but I have to admit I am here because Laverne Cox is in the cast. I keep begging for her to turn up in more genre films, so I will inhale this movie the second it drops. The movie also stars Joey King, Brianne Tju, and Chase Stokes. It is also directed by McG, who many of us most recently remember from Netflix’s The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen. So, I am not sure what to expect when this movie hits the streamer on September 13, but I am curious to see it.
