Todd McFarlane Wants His SPAWN Reboot to Make Little Kids Cry

Since Sony walked back their promise to make Venom an R-rated horror movie, instead releasing a by-the-numbers PG-13 affair, fans of comics and gore are still craving a truly terrifying superhero flick. If Todd McFarlane gets his way, his Spawn reboot (currently brewing at Blumhouse) will be the film that truly breaks all barriers by pulling no punches.

He was quoted at New York Comic Con last weekend as saying he hopes her upcoming movie will make little kids cry! Here’s the quote, courtesy of IGN:

“We’re talking that it would make your kids cry. If you’re going to do dark R, make the children cry who are under 10. That’s the movie. Do I think that The Joker is gonna make 10-year-olds cry? Nope. Would I make them cry? Sure, I would because I’d be doing a movie for adults.”

Not much is known about McFarlane’s Spawn movie besides the fact it will star Jeremy Renner as Twitch Williams and Jamie Foxx as the titular Hellspawn (aka Al Simmons). It’s eyeing a 2019 release, but we don’t have a specific date or even a synopsis. Still, we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you all Spawn-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned!

For the uninitiated, Here’s a bit about Spawn’s pre-antihero existence, via Fandom:

Albert “Al” Francis Simmons was born in Detroit, Michigan as the second of three brothers (Marc, Al, and Richard) to Esther and Bernard Simmons. Simmons was a very gifted officer of the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He later joined the United States Secret Service, which led to his transfer to the Central Intelligence Agency. In the CIA, Simmons was recruited by Director Jason Wynn into a special top-secret covert ops division known as the U.S. Security Group, an elite task force with jurisdiction in all domestic and foreign situations.
