Is John Carpenter Planning a Reboot of THEY LIVE?
Maybe he’s not out of bubble gum after all.
With Halloween 2018 slashing into theaters nationwide this Friday, John Carpenter is getting a lot of love in the media—especially at horror outlets. Though he doesn’t direct the latest installment in the franchise he launched in 1978, he’s on board as both the film’s composer and producer. While Halloween is definitely in the limelight, there’s renewed interest in all of Carpenter’s past properties, including the socio-political alien invasion saga, They Live.
In a recent sit-down with Den of Geeks, Carpenter was asked about the possibility of a sequel or reboot for the 1988 creeper starring the late Roddy Piper; horror fans will definitely want to take note of his response:
“Well, I’m not gonna tell you about that, because it might be closer to reality than you think.”
Apparently, a sequel to They Live was written years ago, but the project failed to pick-up the necessary momentum. Carpenter stated:
“There was a feature film [sequel to They Live in pre-production]. It was a called Resistance, written by, oh, the guy who did the Apes movies. Matt Reeves. But then he moved on, and so the sequel is, well, we’ll see. We’ll just have to see.”
Hopefully, we’ll find out what Carpenter is talking about sooner than later! If you’ve never experienced They Live for yourself, check out the synopsis and trailer below. You might be surprised at just how ahead of its time and prophetic the film is.
Synopsis:
Nada (Roddy Piper), a wanderer without meaning in his life, discovers a pair of sunglasses capable of showing the world the way it truly is. As he walks the streets of Los Angeles, Nada notices that both the media and the government are comprised of subliminal messages meant to keep the population subdued and that most of the social elite are skull-faced aliens bent on world domination. With this shocking discovery, Nada fights to free humanity from the mind-controlling aliens.
