Will LeBron James Save the FRIDAY THE 13TH Franchise?
The legal battle for the future of the Friday the 13th franchise is still far from final. Though original Friday scribe Victor Miller recently won his request for a reversion of rights, Horror, Inc. (director Sean Cunningham’s company) has filed a notice of intent to appeal, meaning the saga could drag on for years. As it stands, Miller own the right to the Friday the 13th name while Horror, Inc. controls the rights to grown-up Jason Voorhees.
An unlikely hero may have emerged in the form of basketball phenom LeBron James. Since joining The Los Angeles Lakers, James is attempting to branch out into Hollywood with his SpringHill Entertainment. The company has already released a few projects and, apparently, James has set his sites on the embattled Friday the 13th franchise.
Though the current legal maneuverings surrounding the property will make things undoubtedly complex, a big payoff from James may be exactly what Miller and Horror, Inc. need to motivate them to come to some form of permanent resolution. Considering Halloween was a massive box office hit this weekend, we could be on the verge of a bona fide slasher resurgence. It would be a shame if Jason Voorhees misses the excitement.
Of course, everything is just conjecture at this point, but we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you all Friday the 13th-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned!
