What does it say about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s movie career that he is now starring in Brendan Fraser’s sloppy seconds? Probably that he could use a nice paycheck just like Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Kristin Davis, and Luis Guzman, as you’ll see in this trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (opening in 3D on February 10th) is the sort of sequel to the 2008 3D Brendan Fraser family fantasy flick Journey to the Center of the Earth. I say “sort of” because the only thing that really seems to be tying the two films together is the return of Josh Hutcherson, who played Fraser’s son in the original, and that this Walden Media production is also a very loosely based adaptation of a classic Jules Verne novel.

Brendan Fraser passed on returning for this follow-up so Dwayne Johnson steps in as Hutcherson’s potential stepdad as they go in search of his missing grandfather (Michael Caine), lost on a mysterious island filled with various monsters and wonders of varying special effects quality. Luis Guzman is the pilot that helps get them there, and Vanessa Hudgens is his hot daughter there to give the son a potential girlfriend.

Having wasted money on the original Journey, I can safely say this sequel from the director of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore and the writers of Bring It On again looks to be a potentially better film if for no other reasons than the lack of Brendan Fraser being in it to shout every single line of dialogue and The Rock replacing his patented People’s Eyebrow with his newly minted Pec Pop of Love™.

Experience the Pec Pop of Love™ for yourself in the trailer below, and imagine how much different Fast Five might have been if he and Vin Diesel had settled their difference with a pec off instead.
