(SPOILERS) Top 5 Questions from Last Night’s Episode of THE WALKING DEAD: “Stradivarius”

Thanks to a preview for next week’s episode of The Walking Dead (bottom of the article), we don’t have to wonder if Eugene is still alive or if The Whisperers will make another appearance. Still, there were plenty of questions posed in last night’s installment, “Stradivarius”—some infinitely more pressing than others.

From plot points we literally need to know before the series takes a midseason hiatus to the things that make us go “Hmm”, these are the top five questions we’re asking after the latest chapter of The Walking Dead Season 9.

Why did Maggie leave The Hilltop?

Okay, besides the fact that we know Lauren Cohan has left The Walking Dead, perhaps indefinitely, to pursue other creative opportunities, for continuity’s sake, we’re dying to know why exactly Maggie left The Hilltop. Leaving Jesus the reluctant leader, we’re informed that Maggie has gone off to commune with Georgia and her clan (Georgia, you may recall, was the middle-aged woman showed up briefly to trade a manual for rebuilding society for some vinyl records). Is she off in Georgia’s Utopia learning how to further rebuild The Hilltop while enjoying some killer tunes, or was there some internal community conflict that forced her to take a leave of absence?

What happened between Maggie and Michonne?

One’s thick as thieves, Michonne is so out of the loop she didn’t even know that Maggie was no longer the Queen of the Hilltop. Even so, she has such bad memories of the walled-off city she doesn’t even want to get close enough to see it. So, what the hell went down between her and Maggie? The last time we saw the two characters together it was when Maggie decided not to bash Negan’s brains in with a crowbar; a tender moment that suggested an end to their emotionally-fueled ideological conflict and the beginning of a new, more compassionate relationship. Yeah, that didn’t happen! What could have possibly transpired between these women who once considered themselves closer than family?

What happened to Daryl?

It’s not difficult to imagine Daryl getting sick of the bureaucratic nonsense inherent in society-building and opting for a solitary, mountain man existence (complete with a loyal canine companion), but there’s clearly more too it than that. He’s camped out by the river where Rick was last seen blowing the bridge to smithereens, meaning he hasn’t been able to move on. Then, there are his scars. Just as Michonne was shown to bare an X-shaped scar on her back last week, “Stradivarius” revealed Daryl has the same identifiers-but, not just one. In addition to two exes on his back, he’s got one on his forehead. Of course I’m wondering what the X signifies, but I’m way more curious about who inflicted these wounds—and I’m even entertaining ideas it has something to do with Alexandria’s split from The Hilltop. Hear me out: We know that Maggie was drifting ideologically from Rick and Michonne’s utopian vision of the future when she sentenced Gregory to death, so, what if the X scars are the result of some draconian form of corporal punishment. Did Daryl and Michonne commit some kind of Hilltop infraction? It would certainly explain the bad blood.

What are The Whisperers” intentions?

We knew that The Whisperers were hot on the heels of Eugene and Rosita, but after a preview of next week’s episode, we know that the clan will be descending on a whole gaggle of our favorite characters. Even if you’re familiar with The Whisperers’ mythology as established in Robert Kirkman’s ongoing comic book series, there’s no guarantee that the show’s producers won’t create some new motivations for the zombie wannabes. So, we can’t help but ask: What are The Whisperers intentions? What’s their end game? If they’ve established comfortable lives walking side by side with the undead, why are they so keen to interfere in the lives of our homies?

So, are Aaron and Jesus, like, “together”?

As the once-strong alliance of Alexandria, The Hilltop, and The Kingdom continues to disintegrate into isolationist communities, Aaron and Jesus have maintained the lines of communication via off-site rendezvous where there keep each other apprised of current events; they also practice their latest fighting moves before falling into the tall grass and laughing like teenagers. Keep in mind, they’re breaking established protocols, giving their meetings another layer of intrigue. Look, I’m not trying to be salacious or make wild assumptions, but Aaron and Jesus actually do become a couple in the comic book series (which, admittedly, could have zero baring on the direction of the series). Still, last night’s episode clearly showed the two have a bond that goes beyond mutual respect and borders on palpable affection. Should we start thinking of couple’s names like “Arronsus? or “Jesuson”?

The Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights at 9 PM (PST) on AMC. Check out a trailer for next week’s midseason finale below.
