IFC Films in Hot Water with MPAA Over Screening of Uncut THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT
Though an R-rated version of the film will be assaulting entertainment via VOD this December, IFC Midnight hosted screenings of The House That Jack Built last night, uncut (as writer/director Lars von Trier intended it). Now, the distributor is in hot water with the MPAA for showing the extreme content and could actually face sanctions. The problem isn’t that America has outlawed NC-17 rated films; unfortunately, attendees were supposed to have signed a waiver.
Per THR (who got the exclusive):
“The MPAA has communicated to the distributor, IFC Films, that the screening of an unrated version of the film in such close proximity to the release of the rated version — without obtaining a waiver — is in violation of the rating system’s rules,” the Motion Picture Association of America said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “The effectiveness of the MPAA ratings depends on our ability to maintain the trust and confidence of American parents. That’s why the rules clearly outline the proper use of the ratings. Failure to comply with the rules can create confusion among parents and undermine the rating system — and may result in the imposition of sanctions against the film’s submitter.”
The truly brave will still be able to see The House that Jack Built (an R-rated version) when it hits select theaters and VOD platforms on December 14th. We’re assuming no paperwork will be needed! You can find participating locations and purchase tickets at the film’s official website, HERE.
Synopsis:
In five episodes, failed architect and vicious sociopath Jack recounts his elaborately orchestrated murders — each, as he views them, a towering work of art that defines his life’s work as a serial killer in the Pacific Northwest.
The House That Jack Built stars Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, and Uma Thurman.
