That’s a Wrap! Filming Ends on Mike Flanagan’s THE SHINING Sequel DOCTOR SLEEP

Expect the Stephen King Renaissance that began in 2017 with the tremendous success of Andy Muschietti’s IT to return with a vengeance beginning in April 2019 when Pet Sematary arrives in US theaters nationwide. That movie will be followed by Muschietti’s sequel, IT: Chapter Two, in September. Then, in January of 2020, we’ll be seeing Mike Flanagan’s hotly-anticipated sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep!

Flanagan took to Facebook late last night to announce that principal photography on Doctor Sleep has wrapped! In addition to breaking the good news, he took a moment to talk about what the experience has meant to him:

“So that’s a wrap on DOCTOR SLEEP! It’s been a long, crazy, truly unique experience. I read the novel as soon as it came out back in 2013, fascinated and moved by the epic story of Dan Torrance and Abra Stone, but I never imagined for a moment that I’d be the person to bring it to the big screen. It’s been an honor to spend the last five months with this fantastic cast and crew, and to be trusted with Stephen King’s extraordinary story. One of the highlights of my career, without a doubt.

“Shine on, everyone. Shine on.”

It’ll be ages until we get a trailer for Doctor Sleep, but we can probably expect some “First Looks” to emerge in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for all Doctor Sleep-related news as details emerge; stay tuned!

Doctor Sleep stars Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, and Ewan McGregor; its official release date is January 24th, 2020. You can check out the synopsis to the source material, Stephen King’s novel, below.

Synopsis:
On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the Stephen King canon.
