Before You See THE DARK CRYSTAL Prequel: Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Gelflings

Horror fans of a certain age have nothing but fond memories for The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s beautiful yet terrifying anomaly released in 1982. Though marketed towards children, it was a complex and genuinely horrifying story that nonetheless promoted courage and ended in triumph.

Now that Netflix is on the verge of releasing a prequel series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, interest in the originalfilm is surging, with many newer horror aficionados only now familiarizingthemselves with the film’s lore. In an effort to acquaint those less familiarwith the world of The Dark Crystal and the menagerie of characters that inhabitit, Mr. H will be producing a seriesof videos exploring key aspects of the mythology.

Today brings a thorough retrospective of the elf-like Gelflings. In The Dark Crystal, only two Gelflings remain, but there were a thriving species who played an integral role in the diverse society of Thra. From The Age of Innocence through The Age of Harmony and The Great Division, it explores the turbulent history of this once-prominent race.

Synopsis:
Jen (Stephen Garlick), raised by the noble race called the Mystics, has been told that he is the last survivor ofhis own race, the Gelflings. He sets out to try to find a shard of the dark crystal, a powerful gem that once provided balance to the universe. After thecrystal was broken, the evil Skeksis used sinister means to gain control. Jenbelieves that he can repair the dark crystal and bring peace back to the world,if he can only find the remaining shard.
