Before You See THE DARK CRYSTAL Prequel: Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Skeksis

Horror fans of a certain age have nothing but fond memories for The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s beautiful yet terrifying anomaly released in 1982. Though marketed towards children, it was a complex and genuinely horrifying story that nonetheless promoted courage and ended in triumph.

Now that Netflix is on the verge of releasing a prequel series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, interest in the original film is surging, with many newer horror aficionados only now familiarizing themselves with the film’s lore. In an effort to acquaint those less familiar with the world of The Dark Crystal and the menagerie of characters that inhabit it, Mr. H will be producing a series of videos exploring key aspects of the mythology.

A couple weeks back, we shared Mr. H’s exploration of the Gelfling, a gentle, hobbitlike species that was decimated before the events of the original Dark Crystal. Today, it’s all about the twisted, birdlike Skeksis, the evil half of yet another metaphysical race that once lived on Thror.

Synopsis:
Jen (Stephen Garlick), raised by the noble race called the Mystics, has been told that he is the last survivor of his own race, the Gelflings. He sets out to try to find a shard of the dark crystal, a powerful gem that once provided balance to the universe. After the crystal was broken, the evil Skeksis used sinister means to gain control. Jen believes that he can repair the dark crystal and bring peace back to the world, if he can only find the remaining shard.
