Netflix Warns Subscribers to Practice Common Sense When Participating in the BIRD BOX Challenge
In Bird Box, one of the most buzzed-about horror movies from last month, Sandra Bullock leads a boy and a girl (named Boy and Girl) on a treacherous trip down a raging river—all while blindfolded. (Check out the trailer and synopsis at the bottom of the article for a hint at why). While it’s a gripping plot motivator for a horror movie, it’s not something that should be attempted in real life.
But this is the Internet Age, an era of Tide Pod Challenges and planking, so (of course) someone came up with the “Bird Box Challenge” in an attempt to create the latest sensational meme. The rules are simple: Blindfold yourself and go about your daily business. The hashtag #BirdBoxChallenge was born, and videos of people crashing, colliding, and falling on their asses are popping up in droves.
Hysterically, Netflix has taken the extraordinary precaution of warning their subscribers against attempting the Bird Box Challenge in a recent Twitter post:
“Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
We’re going to side with Netflix on this one and ask that people please exercise caution when attempting this. There are safe places where laughs can be had but there are also places where people can be hurt. Please choose the former and avoid the latter.
Synopsis:
When a mysterious force decimates the
population, only one thing is certain — if you see it, you die. The survivors
must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their
worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children
embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the
one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they’ll have to cover their
eyes from the evil that chases them — and complete the trip blindfolded.
