Exclusive: Corin Hardy and GUNSHIP Raise “Cthulhu” For Fangoria’s HOLLYDOOM!

Holy hell, readers, do we have something special for you today!

Last year, the horror community rejoiced when it was revealed that the seemingly defunct and dead genre magazine Fangoria was rising from the grave with new ownership and a completely revamped editorial staff. The pieces fell into place to make it one of the most anticipated and exciting announcements of 2018 and fans far and wide have renewed their subscriptions. With fantastic articles, relatable and fascinating contributors, and undeniable quality, Fangoria’s returns is a pure, joyous celebration of horror!

Additionally, Fangoria has launched Fangoria Presents, a label that releases movies and books (and who knows what else is coming in their future!), such as Tommy Wiklund and Sonny Laguna Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich and Preston Fassel’s Our Lady of the Inferno. I think it’s safe to say that Fangoria’s return has been nothing short of a wild success.

The folk over at Lakeshore Records clearly feel the same way as they’ve teamed up with Fangoria to release Hollydoom—Original Magazine Soundtrack, a 10-track compilation album celebrating the return! Featuring already-released songs as well as original tracks from the horror and synthwave community, this release includesCarpenter Brut, Power Glove, Mega Drive, and the legend himself, John Carpenter!

Today, we’re giving you a taste of the Hollydoom-Original Magazine Soundtrack by premiering one of the original tracks on the album: Gunship‘s “Cthulhu”! The track features an opening monologue from Corin Hardy, director of The Nun and The Hallow. Sinister, eldritch, and undeniably catchy, “Cthulhu” is everything that we have come to know and love from Gunship. That it’s a love letter to H.P. Lovecraft’s iconic Old God is the cherry on top, although it’s admittedly one huge cherry!

“Possibly the last word in contemporary culture’s obsession with ’80s nostalgia, this album plays like the soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist, yet one whose title is right on the top of your tongue,” says Fangoria’s Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr. “It’s ten tracks of affectionate, synth-driven false memories that will confuse music historians for generations.”

Gunship member Dan Haigh describes the song to Dread Central, saying, “I just felt like writing something creeping, twisted, and possibly dripping with slime. Most importantly, I felt like creating something transportative. I hope the track takes its listeners on a journey to the darkest corners of their imaginations… listen – taste the salt on the sea air – witness the slathering foul beast rise from his slumber…”

On the importance Fangoria had on his life, Haigh adds, “I grew up making short films, directing music videos, and horror shorts etc – in fact up until the first Gunship release I was actively pursuing directing work. To me, Fangoria was just cut from the cloth of everything which was cool in my universe. A chance to collaborate was an immediate ‘YES’ from me. Collaborating with one of my favorite modern horror directors Corin Hardy on this track was also a huge amount of fun… although when Corin started wearing Cthulhu socks, I knew we’d sunk far enough into sheer madness to potentially make something worthwhile!”

The album is up for pre-order today and will be released next Friday as a digital release. A vinyl will be coming out later this year.
