Shudder Reveals Original Documentary HORROR NOIRE
The role of black people in the world of horror cinema hasn’t always been as heroic and inspiring as we’ve seen in the last few years. It’s a sad truth that historical and institutional racism has had a recognizable impact on the roles, stories, and success of the black community in the horror genre. While that’s definitely changing and evolving, there’s still a lot of road ahead where improvements can be made and wrongs can be righted.
Part of understanding the issues that the black community have endured over the years comes from simply listening to them, hearing their voices and their words as they explain their experiences, their aspirations, and their realities. And to help more people have that opportunity, Shudder has just revealed that they will be premiering an exclusive documentary by the name of Horror Noire, which is based on the book of the same name by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman.
The documentary, “…takes a critical look at a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and embraced both black filmmakers and black audiences.”
Horror Noire features interviews with Ernest Dickerson (Bones), Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), Jordan Peele (Us), Tina Mabry (Mississippi Damned), Tony Todd (Candyman), Paula Jai Parker (Tales from the Hood), Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep), and Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman. Tananarive Due, Fangoria Editor-in-Chief Phil Nobile Jr., and GraveyardShiftSisters‘ Ashlee Blackwell are producers.
A trailer can be seen above. Horror Noire is coming to Shudder on February 7.
