HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U Release Date Moved from Anniversary of Parkland Shooting

Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to 2017’s surprise horror comedy sensation Happy Death Day, was scheduled to hit theaters on Valentines Day, February 14th. Last year, however, February 14th was a day of national tragedy when a gunman killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Considering survivors intend to mark the day with sacred remembrances, Universal has made the empathetic decision to adjust the release-date of their violent thriller, which also happens to take place on a campus.

Universal made the announcement yesterday afternoon:

“When Universal Pictures became aware last week that the one-year anniversary of the tragic events in Parkland, Florida fell on the Happy Death Day 2U release date, the studio spoke with victim advocates and immediately began the process of changing the release date of the film. Following discussions with its partners in exhibition, Universal will move the North American release date to February 13. Additionally, the studio has decided not to show the film in Parkland and the surrounding areas. Outdoor, digital and in-theatre marketing for the film will be suspended in that market. The studio understands the importance of memorializing the February 14 date as an opportunity to continue to allow the Parkland community to heal.”

Good move guys. And, hey, that means we’ll have a chance to check out Happy Death Day 2U a day earlier than expected. Check out the synopsis and trailer below.

Synopsis:
Tree Gelbman is a blissfully self-centered collegian who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling that she’s experienced the events of this day before. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again magically wakes up in Carter’s dorm room unharmed. Now, the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who murdered her.

Happy Death Day 2U is written and directed by Christopher Landon; the film stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, and Ruby Modine.
