Anne Hathaway Snags Lead in Robert Zemeckis’ Adaptation of THE WITCHES

Warner Bros. and Robert Zemeckis have landed Anne Hathaway for the lead role in their upcoming adaptation of The Witches, based on the novel by Roald Dahl. Hathaway will play the Grand Witch, a part played by Anjelica Huston in Nicolas Roeg’s 1990 adaptation. Variety was first to get the word out, also announcing:

Zemeckis will also pen the script as well as produce with his partner Jack Rapke through their banner ImageMovers, along with Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro.

Synopsis:
While staying at a hotel in England with his grandmother, Helga (Mai Zetterling), young Luke (Jasen Fisher) inadvertently spies on a convention of witches. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) reveals a plan to turn all children into mice through a magical formula. When they find that Luke has overheard, the witches test the formula on him. Now, with the help of Helga and the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson), Luke the mouse must fight back against the witches.
