Here’s the Difference Between Toho’s “Burning Godzilla” and Legendary’s “Fire Godzilla”
Younger genre fans may be getting to know Godzilla for the first time through Legendary’s Monsterverse, which also includes King Kong. In the upcoming sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, we’ll also be introduced to Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah, three characters the studio purchased (for a limited time) from Toho, the production company who invented the Big G, and first introduced him in 1954.
While Legendary is borrowing these characters from Toho, it’s important to note that the two Monsterverses are not interchangeable. For example, we recently hypothesized that “Burning Godzilla” would make an appearance in King of the Monsters, but have since learned that Legendary’s deal with Toho does not extend to other versions of Godzilla (only “Classic” Godzilla, if you will).

It has been revealed through leaked images of an upcoming toy line, however, that Godzilla will morph into a being dubbed “Fire Godzilla”. While many believe this is basically “Burning Godzilla” with a name change, one of our favorite UK film critics and academics, Mr. H, has a different theory. Basically, he suggests “Fire Godzilla” may be paying homage to “Burning Godzilla”, but he’s an iteration unique to Legendary’s Monsterverse with a unique set of abilities.
It’s a bit confusing and almost like splitting hairs, but the video at the top of the article makes sense of it all. While it’s mostly based on conjectures, he makes a compelling argument. After giving it a spin, check out the synopsis and trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters below.
