1 Huge Twist & 1 Major Reveal: Let’s Dig into the Latest Trailer for PET SEMATARY

The second trailer for Pet Sematary (directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer) arriving on theaters on April 5th, hit the Internet thios morning and we’re still picking our collective jaws off the floor. If you’re not familiar with the novel by Stephen King or the Mary Lambert’s 1989 adaptation of Pet Sematary, then there was nothing spoiler-ish about it.

Filtered through the mind of someone familiar with both the book and the last movie, however, the latest trailer for Pet Sematary is shocking on multiple levels. Not only does it look creepy as fuck, but there was (at least) one huge twist and one major reveal that are nothing short of earth-shaking for King fans.

These days, trailers are often accused of revealing too much, so if you want to go into Pet Sematary this April knowing as little as possible stop ready now. If you’re ready to dig deep, read on.

The Huge Twist and its Implication:
In Kölsch and Widmyer’s Pet Sematary, it isn’t toddler Gage who gets run over in the road by an 18-wheeler—it’s Ellie (played by Jeté Laurence). While it may seem like the filmmakers are softening the blow of killing a child, there are major implications within this revision—especially as it relates to Rachel (played by Amy Seimetz).

Rachel was home alone with Zelda when she died, a fact that has haunted her for her entire life. In this latest iteration of Pet Sematary, Zelda (played by Alyssa Brooke Levine) is only 10 or 11-years old—approximately the same age as Ellie. For Rachel, her grief will be compounded, dealing with the loss of her first born on top of the guilt she feels over letting Zelda die. Perhaps she’ll even feel like Ellie’s death is punishment for letting Zelda die.

It also gives additional motivations for Louis (played by Jason Clarke) to reanimate their lost daughter; he could see at as an extreme measure that’s nonetheless necessary lest Rachel find herself completely consumed by her sorrow.

The Major Reveal:
One aspect of the novel that never made it into Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary was the Wendigo that haunts the woods. A dangerous beast from Native American mythology, we see an image of the Wendigo when Jud Crandall (played by Jonathan Lithgow) is showing Louis pages from an old book; in the very next scene, the two men are trekking through the woods at night, and we can hear the creature roar. A Wendigo is similar to Sasquatch, but can change shape and loves to feast on human flesh.

Synopsis:
Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbor Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences.
