(Teaser) RINGU Sequel SADAKO Haunts Japan This Summer

As Nicolas Pesce toils in post-production on his upcoming reboot of The Grudge (slated for a January 2020 release) another classic J-horror film is getting a sequel in its homeland. The latest chapter in the Ringu franchise, Sadako, will begin haunting Japan on May 24th!

There have been three American remakes of Ringu: 2002’s The Ring, 2005’s The Ring Two, and 2017’s Rings. In Japan, however, there have been six Ringu instalments (seven if you include the crossover Sadako vs. Kayako which pit Ringu’s ghastly apparition against her counterpart in The Grudge). Here’s what we know about Sadako, via Moshi Moshi Nippon:

The film will star Elaiza Ikeda as the main character Mayu Akigawa, a psychology counselor who gets involved in an incident with Yusuke Ishida, played by Takashi Tsukamoto, who will try to fix it. Hiroya Shimizu will play the part of Mayu’s younger brother Kazuma Akigawa who becomes a YouTuber to try and awaken Sadako’s curse. Himeka Himejima will play Jinko, a mysterious girl who lost her memory and is taken in at the hospital Mayu works at. Renn Kiriyama will play Mayu’s colleague Minori Fujii.

Synopsis:
A girl with amnesia is under the care of counselor Mayu. The patient is under police guard and of special interest. Yet, not many know why and the girl herself is oblivious to everything. At the same time, Mayu’s brother is one of those Internet wanna-bes and looking to become popular and gain attention. The boy begins his own adventures.

Hideo Nakata directs Sadako from a screenplay penned by Noriaki Sugihara; the Ringu films are inspired by the novel by Kôji Suzuki.

We don’t have a trailer or an American release date for Sadako, but you can check out the creepy teaser in the tweet below. Get ready to go back down the well!
