The New CANDYMAN in Jordan Peele’s Remake Has Been Cast!
The headline says it all, but it bares repeating: The titular Candyman in Jordan Peele’s upcoming reboot has been cast. The new incarnation of Daniel Robatille will be played by Aquaman villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II—provided current negotiations end successfully. Variety broke the news this morning. It’ll be a busy year for Abdul-Mateen, who portrayed the nefarious Cadillac in Netflix’s The Get Down and will appear next in Peele’s upcoming doppelganger thriller Us (not to mention HBO’s Watchmen series).
Though no deal is done, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is in talks to star in MGM’s new retelling of the classic horror tale with Jordan Peele producing. Little Woods writer-director Nia DaCosta is on board to helm. MGM and Win Rosenfeld are producing with Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. The studio is touting the upcoming film as a “spiritual sequel” to the original. It will return to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
This is exciting news indeed, as Candyman has amassed a huge cult following since the character was first introduced in 1992. The original film, directed by Bernard Rose and starring Tony Todd, is based on the short story The Forbidden by Clive Barker.
