Video Attempts to Piece Together Plot of Neill Blomkamp’s Unmade ALIEN 5
Now that the Alien franchise is about to become the property of Disney, it marks a new chapter for the series (launched by Ridley Scott in 1979). Though Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection didn’t garner the accolades of the first two Alien flicks, the franchise was thrust back into the limelight in the 2010s.
Right around the 30th Anniversary of James Cameron’s Aliens, there was a lot of excitement swirling around a proposed Alien sequel by Neil Blomkamp, one that would retcon Ripley, Newt, and Hicks back into existence. Even Sigourney Weaver was backing the project, saying it would give Ripley the proper send off the iconic character deserves.
Alas, this wasn’t meant to be. Scott unseated Blomkamp by reinvesting himself in the franchise with a planed trio of Alien universe prequels. And while Scott’s vision was never meant to terminate the possibility of Blomkamp’s Alien 5, it has certainly taken the series far off course, minimizing the importance of the Xenomorph.
Now, with Disney about to own Alien, it seems less likely than ever that Blomkamp’s Alien 5 will ever come to fruition. Still, one of our favorite UK film critics/academics Mr. H has used all available resources at his disposal in an attempt to piece together the plot of Alien 5. It’s a remarkable investigation and a wonderful window into what might have been.
