You’ll Soon Be Able to Play as Gollum in New LORD OF THE RINGS Video Game
Gollum (the Hobbit formerly known as Sméagol) is one of the most popular characters in all of Middle Earth, the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Portrayed via motion-capture by Andy Serkis in the two film trilogies directed by Peter Jackson, Gollum embodies a duality that makes him both pitiable and simultaneously terrifying!
Now, we’re getting word via The Hollywood Reporter that German video game developers Daedalic Entertainment have unveiled a new project: Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be an action-adventure game that takes place during the years in between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
“You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Sméagol decisions or the Gollum decision,” Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO and co-founder of Daedalic Entertainment, tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“Our goal was to present a storytelling experience. About four years ago, I caught Middle-earth Enterprises in Berkeley, maybe like Peter Jackson did 20 years ago, and I said we’re interested in licensing Lord of the Rings.”
Lord of the Rings: Gollum sounds like something of a Choose Your Own Adventure saga, one where players will be able to take a path based on what Gollum would do or what Sméagol would do. Look for the game on PCs sometime in 2021.
