Battle Monsters During the Harlem Renaissance with BITTER ROOT Feature Film from Legendary

Horror and superhero movies have come a long way towards celebrating cultural diversity in the 21st Century. The films of Jordan Peele and the recent mega-success of Black Panther are great examples. There’s still plenty of room for improvement, but the folks at Legendary are looking to reflect the entirity of American society by giving support to a new project: A feature film adapatation of the horror comic Bitter Root from Image Comics.

The series focuses on an African American family of monster hunters plying their trade during the Harlem Renaissance (1924) in New York City. Deadline was first to report the news late last week:

The series creators — David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown, will executive produce along with Big Machine’s Sean Owolo. Jon Silk and Disney Hall will oversee the project for Legendary. Bitter Root has been a breakout success for Image Comics since the 24-page inaugural issue hit store shelves the week before last Thanksgiving.

Comic Description:
Once known as the greatest monster hunters of all time, the Sangerye family specialized in curing the souls of those infected by hate, but those days are fading. A terrible tragedy has claimed most of the family, leaving the surviving cousins split between curing monsters and killing them. Now, with a new breed of monster loose on the streets of Harlem, the Sangerye family must come together, or watch the human race fall to untold evil.

We don’t have a target release date or casting information at this time, but we’ll be following this project as it unfolds to bring you new details as they emerge. Stay tuned and check back often!
