Ascend to LEVEL 16 on Blu-ray/DVD Later This Month

Regular readers of Dread Central know that I’m a huge fan of the feminist, dystopian horror Level 16, which I was fortunate enough to catch at Fantastic Fest in 2018. Here’s what I wrote about the film at the time:

In a nutshell, Level 16 could be described as a young adult version of The Handmaid’s Tale. But it’s more than that: Level 16 is a timely exploration of the commoditization of beauty and how society forces oppressive expectations on young women. Making brilliant use of a spartan set, the film takes place in a prison-like school for girls, an institute that prepares them for “adoption” once they’ve been thoroughly indoctrinated. Obedience is prized above all other virtues. The most chilling aspect of this dystopian nightmare is the fact that it’s not set in a distant future, rather it could be an era just beyond tomorrow’s horizon.

Though already available to stream, collectors will be able to add Level 16 to their cinematic libraries when the film arrives on Blu-ray and DVD April 30th, courtesy of Dark Sky. If you haven’t already experienced Level 16 for yourself, check out the synopsis and trailer below.

Synopsis:
Girls in a prison-like boarding school embark on a desperate search to uncover the awful truth behind their captivity.

Level 16 is written and directed by Danishka Esterhazy who described the film as “Sci-fi about women, made by women.” The film stars Katie Douglas, Celina Martin, and Sara Canning.
