Why Can’t Todd McFarlane Get his SPAWN Reboot Off the Ground?
We’ve been following news of Todd McFarlane’s proposed Spawn reboot since the project was first announced last year. Over the months, the antihero’s creator has promised us something that will make children cry, women swoon, and men crumble. He’s got the support of Blumhouse behind him and even landed A-Lister Jamie Foxx as the lead.
So why is 2019 nearing its midpoint without much movement on the Spawn front? McFarlane took time to explain the complex situation to the folks at ComicBook.com and, frankly, it sounds like he’s getting frustrated.
“The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.”
There’s no telling is the 1997’s disastrous Spawn feature film is to blame for the trepidation, or if McFarlane’s latest vision is too extreme. To be honest, the material will be incredibly difficult to bring to the screen in a way that will satisfy McFarlane and horror fans. But, clearly, this is how the business works.
Hopefully, McFarlane won’t have to “walk away”, because this is something we’d really like to see come to fruition–no matter what the obstacles are.
