Fruit to Debut with Don’t Look Up
Oh, no. Now Fruit Chan is coming to the US, after we’ve already watered down Hideo Nakata and the Pang Bros. Poor, poor Fruit.
Daily Variety got word about a new remake being planned that will see the director of the “Dumplings” (pictured) segment of Three Extremes (review) making his US debut. The film is called Don’t Look Up and will, of course, be a remake of an early Hideo Nakata film called Joyuu-Rei, about a film being shot in Transylvania that is continually tainted by an old piece of celluloid containing images of a woman’s murder.
“I loved the original film by Hideo Nakata,” Chan revealed to Variety. “And I was happy to take on the remake. For too long I’ve been labeled as an art-house director. I’m a director.” Sorry, man, you make something like “Dumplings” and people immediately feel as if they have to label you something that frightens them less.
The good news is that Vertigo have nothing to do with the remake; instead it’s being produced by South Africa’s Distant Horizon and Japan’s Action 5, so maybe we’ll actually be starring down the barrel of something cool. One can hope.
