Sadako From THE RING Movies Becomes A YouTube Celebrity In Bizarre New Manga Series
Since the release of the first Ring movie in 1995, Sadako, the female ghost from the franchise, has become something of an iconic figure in Japanese popular culture. Not only has the character been featured in photo shoots and national sporting events, but she’s now been given her very own comedy manga series from creators Noriaki Sugihara and Aya Tsutsumi. And yes, it’s just as strange as it sounds.
As reported by Anime News Network, Sadako stars in a new Japanese comic series called Sadako-san to Sadako-chan, which translates to Ms. Sadako and Little Sadako. The story introduces a young girl, who also happens to be named Sadako, as she hides in a closet from the ghost who shares her namesake. But when Sadako the ghost arrives to claim her victim, she is surprised to learn that the little girl is not afraid of her, which leads the two of them to form a bond with one another.
Things get even stranger when the duo then decide to start making YouTube videos, and before long, they both become internet sensations. We used to be terrified by the Ring movies, but knowing that Sadako is now enjoying a new career as an internet celebrity, we’re not sure we’ll ever be able to look at them in the same way again.
This offbeat manga series was created to help promote the new Sadako film, which opened in Japan last month. It debuted online as a web comic, and while there’s currently no word of an English translation, a collected edition was released in Japan by publisher Kadokawa.
