Did You Make the Connection? 3 FROM HELL Poster Pays Homage to the Most Popular True Crime Novel Ever
A couple of days ago, we got the first official poster for Rob Zombie’s sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, 3 From Hell. If you thought, “Gee, that looks kind of familiar,” there’s probably a reason for that–especially if you’re a true crime buff. The color scheme, the fonts, the textures, the eyes… Have a look.
Zombie appears to have combined elements of several different editions of Helter Skelter, the true-crime novel about the Manson Family murders penned by prosecuting attorney Vincent Bugliosi with help from Curt Gentry. The poster even looks like a well-worn paperback. Take a look at some of the books covers below to see if you agree.
First published in 1974, the book presents Bugliosi’s firsthand account of the cases of Charles Manson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and other members of the self-described Manson Family. 40+ years later, Helter Skelter remains the best selling true crime novel ever written.
This wouldn’t be the first time Zombie has referenced Mason in his Rejects Universe. Otis Driftwood’s most iconic line, “I’m the Devil and I’m here to do the Devil’s work”, is a variation of a quote attributed to Manson Family lieutenant Tex Watson, supposedly spoken during the Sharon Tate murders.
3 From Hell will reunite the Firefly clan (Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Sid Haig); the film will also feature Richard Brake, Emilio Rivera, Danny Trejo, Kevin Jackson, Wade Williams, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Pancho Moler, Daniel Roebuck, David Ury, Sean Whalen, Austin Stoker, Dee Wallace, Bill Oberst Jr., Dot-Marie Jones, and Tom Papa. Look for it in select theaters September 16th thru 18th via Fathom.
