Is THOR 4 to Blame? Warner Bros. Put Live-Action AKIRA Movie On Hold Indefinitely

A couple of months back, we reported that a live-action adaptation of the seminal anime Akira was in the works at Warner Bros, eyeing a 2021 release date. Well, put the breaks on that enthusiasm, Akira fans, because Variety is reporting the project is being shelved.

Sources indicate that after a brief delay, the studio has pulled the plug on production indefinitely for the classic anime adaptation, which was set to begin later this fall. Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi was on board to direct, and the studio hopes when he is done with production on Thor 4 that the film can get back into production. Though the studio and Waititi would still like another crack at this adaptation of Akira, multiple sources close to the studio found the timing of the Thor announcement quite surprising with one person adding they were caught off guard by Waititi’s decision to jump over to this project when Akira was getting closer to its own production.

An Akira adaptation has been in various stages of pre-production since 2012. Does this indicate the end of Warner Bros. Akira ambitions? Time will tell.
