Director Talks Behind the Mask Release

Though the details have yet to be revealed, good news is definitely on its way for my favorite movie from Fantasia, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (review). Director Scott Glosserman told Fangoria today that an official announcement is coming very soon “We’re hoping for an early 2007 theatrical release in the States, either simultaneously or followed shortly by big-screen play all over the world,” he explained. “Generally there’s about a three-month window between the final theatrical showing and the DVD, so the disc will most likely be out in the first half of ’07.”

For those who have not had the pleasure of seeing the film at one of its numerous film festival screenings, Behind the Mask (which Glosserman told us at Fantasia may have to undergo a title change because of the Hannibal Lechter prequel on the way) follows the titular character, whose only goal in life is to become a legendary killer like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, or Jason Vorhees, all of whom are real people in the reality the film takes place in. He’s got a mentor, an Ahab, and a back story all set up. A documentary crew follows him around, discovering all the secrets of setting up the perfect killing spree, until things take a turn for the real on them. It’s funny, intelligent, and unlike anything you’ve seen before.

The DVD he mentioned will be stacked with goodies as tons of footage was shot that couldn’t be used. The making-of doc promises to be a ride in and of itself: “Mount St. Helens erupted when we were location scouting, about 20 miles from us, and there was some funny stuff there,” he told the site. “I did a video diary which will be infused into the making-of. Every night, I talked into the camera, and we’ll also include casting sessions and things like that. I’m sure we’ll do an audio commentary, and we may even have Leslie Vernon do one too, which would be very interesting.”

For more on this slice of cinematic genius, hit the film’s official site and make sure to be its friend on MySpace by clicking here. Keep your eyes peeled for the official word on its release any day now!
