GHOSTBUSTERS, Ivan Reitman (1984)
GHOSTBUSTERS. The epitome of horror comedy inspired by Dan Aykroyd’s fascination and belief in the paranormal. After an encounter with a ghost, they decide to create ‘Ghostbusters’ a paranormal investigation and elimination service. ZOMBIELAND, Rubin Fleischer (2009)
ZOMBIELAND follows Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Spreading across the entire United States, an outbreak of mad cow disease, turned into an outbreak of mad person disease which turned into an outbreak of mad zombie disease. Before long, America is full of dangerous, death-hunting zombies. Eisenberg meets Harrelson, Stone and Breslin on his way to seek safety and the four of them end up taking a road-trip around South America in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies.
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, Drew Goddard (2012)
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS sees a bunch of college students spend their weekend in what they think is an abandoned cabin in the woods. However, the cabin is being remotely controlled from an underground lab and the students are manipulated through intoxication that reduces logical thinking… and increases libido. Whilst at the cabin, the students face a brutal zombie attack and try to escape, but the engineers in the lab block them from doing so. The film sees the student’s battel against the engineers in dark ways, but despite this the humour throughout brings a sense of goofiness to the screen.
FRIGHTNIGHT, Craig Gillespie (2011)
A remake of Tom Holland’s 1985 Fright Night, Craig Gillespie’s version differs with its comedic incorporation. Teenager Charley Brewster discovers he has a new neighbour next door called Jerry (Collin Farrell). Charley’s friends from school tell him that students have been going missing and that they think Jerry is a vampire and the one responsible. Charley, who is friendly with Jerry, is offended by the comment and decides to ignore his friends. But of course, his friends are right. More people continue to go missing and Charley himself slowly grows suspicious of Jerry. In an attempt to find out what is really happening, Charley breaks into Jerry’s house and discovers that the missing victims are being kept locked up in the house. Though it may not sound it, this film is rather light-hearted and humorous despite the gory scenes.
