Elizabeth Banks is no stranger to ur beloved genre after sporting roles in films such as writer-director James Gunn’s 2006 horror-comedy classic Slither and the recent Gunn-produced superhero horror movie Brightburn.

And today we’ve learned via Variety that Banks has been tapped to direct and star in Universal’s upcoming take on Invisible Woman with The Girl on the Train screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson penning the script based on an original pitch by Banks.

On top of directing and starring in the upcoming film, Banks will also produce Universal’s Invisible Woman along with Max Handelman and Alison Small who will executive produce.

While plot specifics are still under tight wraps, it’s been stressed that Banks’ Invisible Woman will have no connection to Blumhouse and writer-director Leigh Whannell’s upcoming reboot of The Invisible Man starring Elisabeth Moss and Oliver Jackson-Cohen.

There will also be no crossover potential for the two films.

The news follows on the heels that Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) will be helming a standalone Renfield movie based on Dracula’s infamous henchman. And The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is producing a remake of John Landis’ An American Werewolf in London.

Meanwhile, Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man centers on Cecilia Kass who is trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist. She escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister, their childhood friend, and his teenage daughter. But when Cecilia’s abusive ex commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. And as a series of eerie coincidences turn lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man will hit theaters on February 28, 2020.
