THE SHINING Meets FREE SOLO in Netflix’s FIRST ASCENT

Netflix has just snatched up the mucho sought-after rights to First Ascent, screenwriter Colin Bannon’s The Black List genre script. Deadline reports the streaming giant paid high six figures for Bannon’s script which is described as The Shining meets Free Solo.

Jake Scott is attached to direct.

It begins two years after a free solo accident nearly kills Hillary Hall, she enlists the help of her old climbing partners to document her comeback — the first ascent of a 4000-foot “virgin” rock wall in China. During the harrowing summit, Hillary struggles with her inner demons and supernatural forces, as it slowly becomes clear that this mountain does not want to be conquered.

Ridley Scott, Kevin Walsh, Michael Pruss, and Sukee Chew are producing.

Jake Scott, who directed American Woman with Sienna Miller – along with videos for U2, Soundgarden, Oasis, and The Smashing Pumpkins – is said to be “perfectly suited” to direct.

After all, he’s an avid climber who’s scaled some of the biggest mountains in the world after being taught at 14 to climb by his uncle, The Last Boy Scout and True Romance director Tony Scott.
