This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Darren Lynn Bousman
Born on this day in 1979: director Darren Lynn Bousman
Bousman’s first major film was Saw II. He was shopping a script called The Desperate but many producers felt it was too violent and too similar to Saw. The Saw producers read his script and decided he would be perfect to direct the sequel. The Desperate became Saw II and Bousman began shooting a couple months later. He would go on to direct Saw III, Saw IV, and has signed on to direct another installment of Saw set to be released in 2020.
Besides Saw, Bousman has had a career loaded with horror. Among his projects: Repo! The Genetic Opera, based on a stage show he directed; a loose remake of Mother’s Day, about a trio of brothers who discover their mother lost her house, and take revenge on the new homeowners – until Mother comes home and takes over; religious horror film 11-11-11; another horror musical, The Devil’s Carnival; The Barrens, a story loosely based on the Jersey Devil; and a segment of Tales of Halloween.
