This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Leigh Whannell
Born on this day in 1977: writer/actor/director Leigh Whannell
Whannell met James Wan in film school, and the two formed a friendship and partnership that has lasted to this day. Together, the two wrote the script for Saw, which Wan would go on to direct, and Whannell would act in. The two also collaborated on Dead Silence and the script for Saw III.
The pair again collaborated on Insidious, which would lead to a four-film franchise. Whannell wrote all four films, and appeared in all four as Specs, one of two paranormal investigative assistants. Whannell would make the third installment of the franchise his directorial debut.
Outside of his work with James Wan, Whannell wrote and starred in Cooties, about tainted chicken nuggets that cause a zombie outbreak in an elementary school. He wrote and directed Upgrade, a futuristic tale of a technophobe who must turn to technology for revenge; and he will be writing and directing the upcoming Invisible Man remake.
