Amazon Abandons THE DARK TOWER TV Series

Amazon Studios produced a pilot based on Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. It was designed to be independent of the 2017 film and a more faithful retelling of the book. But it looks like they have passed on the series from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara.

Deadline reports that Amazon executives felt like the pilot was “not on the level” of other “large-scope elevated genre series the streamer has in production/pre-production” like Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of the Rings.

The first episode was directed by Stephen Hopkins who is best known around these parts for helming A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, Predator 2, Judgment Night, Blown Away, The Ghost and the Darkness, and The Reaping.

The series was set to explore the origin story of Roland Deschain (Sam Strike) and how he first became a gunslinger, how he got his guns, his first conflict with the man in black (Jasper Pääkkönen), his first love and his first mission. The cast of the pilot is believed to have included Michael Rooker, Jerome Flynn, and Joana Ribeiro.

Meanwhile, the recent-ish movie adaptation followed Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, who is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.
