Nia DaCosta’s CANDYMAN Brings Back Helen Lyle

Little Woods writer-director Nia DaCosta and producer Jordan Peele’s Candyman “spiritual sequel” with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris hits this June. And today we learned from our buddies over at Bloody Disgusting that Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen in the original) will be in the new film.

Cassie Kramer (see below) is taking over the role and it’s unknown if Virginia Madsen makes any appearance. We’ll let you know when we hear more!

The “spiritual sequel” will return to the neighborhood where the legend began: The now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

Little Woods writer-director Nia DaCosta will be taking the helm of this Jordan Peele-produced reboot which Universal Pictures will unleash into a theater near you on June 12, 2020.

As mentioned above, Madsen played Helen in the original. She was a skeptical graduate student who befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago’s Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman’s description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real.

The original film was written and directed by Bernard Rose based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. TriStar Pictures released it on October 16, 1992.
