This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday David Lynch
Born on this day in 1946: writer/director David Lynch
Lynch has a European flair for non-linear storytelling, symbolic imagery, and general weirdness. Yet the writer/director/editor/sound designer/producer/actor/whatever was born in Montana. The family moved around a lot because of his father’s job, a researcher for the Department of Agriculture. He lived in Idaho, Washington, North Carolina, and Virginia before going to school in Philadelphia.
Lynch is responsible for some of the most breathtaking, bizarre films in American cinema, including Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Lost Highways, Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire.
He is probably best known for Twin Peaks, a TV series that ran for two seasons in the early 1990s. The show started with the discovery of the dead body of Laura Palmer, the pretty, popular high school prom queen. The investigation takes a left turn as Laura’s dark side is discovered, and the entire town scrambles to keep their secrets secret. The fan-favorite TV show returned with a prequel feature film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me in 1992, and an eighteen episode revival, Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017.
