Deadline reports that Bella Thorne will star in Braid writer-director Mitzi Peirone’s post-apocalyptic thriller The Uncanny.

The film presents a future where every citizen is implanted with a chip capable of controlling everything from emotions to directions, until a routine update backfires, causing a cyber apocalypse. Wiping out most of humanity, five strangers miraculously survive, now forced to live hidden in a bunker with their implants ripped from their spines. They were the few lucky enough to survive – until Scarlet (Thorne) begins to suspect they were not saved at all, or by chance.

Rebecca Berrih, Thor Bradwell and Courtney Shepard will produce from a screenplay written by Peirone and Chaya Doswell.

Shepard says: “It offers a timely and compelling glimpse into human’s dependence on technology and the greater evils of such addiction. We’re excited to have Bella on board for such a strong female-led team. I have no doubt Mitzi will craft something visually and thematically stunning.”

Rated R for disturbing/violent content, language, some sexuality, and drug use, Braid centered on two wanted women who steal from a wealthy and mentally unstable friend who lives in a fantasy world. To get her money, the fugitives must take part in a deadly and perverse game of make-believe in a sprawling yet decaying estate. As things become increasingly hallucinatory and violent, the duo soon realizes that obtaining the cash may be the least of their concerns.

It starred Madeline Brewer as Daphne Peters/Mother with Imogen Waterhouse as Petula Thames/Doctor, Sarah Hay as Tilda Darlings/Daughter, and Scott Cohen as Detective Siegel. It was written and directed by Mitzi Peirone. Logan Steinhardt and Arielle Elwes produced.
