LVRS: ALTER Releases Another Short Film for Women in Horror Month

ALTER has pretty big plans for February. Coinciding with Women in Horror Month, the home for horror is exclusively releasing three short films directed by women. The first was Nose Nose Nose Eyes!, an unsettling Korean short film, directed by Jiwon Moon (link below). Today, we’re thrilled to share the Lynchian-esque experimental horror film LVRS by Emily Bennett; give it a spin embedded at the top of the article!

Synopsis:
LVRS follows a couple during the course of a single day. A woman wakes up in a white room with her lover, a man whose face is always covered by a mirror. When she looks at him, she sees her reflection. She sees that she is happy and beautiful. But throughout the course of the film, the Man takes the Woman apart, piece by piece. He removes parts of her body but replaces them with beautiful red objects. Blood red imagery punctuates the otherwise dreamy, muted palette of the film in a surreal, nearly dialogue-free narrative. But even as she’s falling apart, the Woman’s reflection never changes. It’s always beautiful, smiling, and happy. And so, she stays with him.

Director’s Statement:
I didn’t purposely create this film in response to the Me Too movement. It just happened to be the story I needed to tell. I was inspired to create it because of abuse I’ve experienced and abuse my friends have experienced. I wanted to create a dreamlike horror film to heighten the visceral experience of abuse in order to continue a dialogue about it. An added bonus: I was able to donate funds to The Domestic Violence Resource Center because of this project. Through horror, I hope to shock audiences and perhaps change the perception of abuse and why women might choose to stay in abusive relationships.
