Video: Esther Lived in Alternate Ending of 2009’s ORPHAN
One of the biggest horror news stories to hit the internet last week was the announcement that Esther, a prequel to 2009’s Orphan, is in the works. Here’s a recap if you missed it:
Deadline broke the news in an exclusive:
“The prequel is written by David Coggeshall. In it, Lena Klammer orchestrates a brilliant escape from a Russian psychiatric facility and travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family. But Lena’s new life as ‘Esther’ [played by Isabelle Fuhrman in Orphan] comes with an unexpected wrinkle and pits her against a mother who will protect her family at any cost. Filming is expected to start in the third quarter.”
A continuation of the Orphan saga will have to be a prequel, obviously, since Esther dies at the end of the film. (That’s not a spoiler–Orphan is over 10 years old!) But she might have survived has producers chosen to use an alternate ending that was shot during the production. This and other deleted scenes were made available to viewers on the UK Optimum Home Releasing DVD. Watch what could have been embedded at the top of the article!
Orphan was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra; in addition to Furman, the film stars Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard. Stay tuned for additional details regarding Esther as news emerge.
