UPGRADE 2: Leigh Whannel & Jason Blum Want Big-Budget Sequel
Upgrade and The Invisible Man writer-director Leigh Whannell says he’d be very up for making Upgrade 2 with an increased budget – and Blumhouse’s Jason Blum is up for it too.
Whannell tells Fandom: “So Hollywood economics dictates whether there’s going to be a sequel, and Upgrade… I wouldn’t exactly call it a monster hit. I’d call it a cult hit, and cult hits, when they look at the books of cult hits, they’re like ‘Nyah, sequel’. So we’ll see. I loved making that film, so I’d love to do it with a bit more money.”

Blum adds: “I would love an Upgrade sequel. I will say that we haven’t put it to bed yet. We have no immediate plans, but Upgrade is very much on my mind — and on Leigh’s mind as well.”
Upgrade began after a brutal mugging leaves Grey Trace paralyzed in the hospital and his beloved wife dead. A billionaire inventor soon offers Trace a cure — an artificial intelligence implant called STEM that will enhance his body. Now able to walk, Grey finds that he also has superhuman strength and agility — skills he uses to seek revenge.

The film sports an 87% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Like its augmented protagonist, Upgrade’s old-fashioned innards get a high-tech boost — one made even more powerful thanks to sharp humor and a solidly well-told story.
