CLUE: Jason Bateman Explains Why He’s No Longer Directing Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated Reboot
One of my favorite comedies out there is the 1985 murder-mystery Clue starring Tim Curry. The movie is (obviously) based on the famous board game and at one point Jason Bateman was set to helm an R-rated reboot with Ryan Reynolds. But now that’s not happening. Why?
Bateman tells Collider: “[Clue is] something that we were getting very close to starting, but as it turned out something of that size takes much, much longer to do than what the seasonal hiatus was able to accommodate. It would have pushed back the start of this season too far. So, unfortunately, I had to step off of that.”

He adds: “But if it’s still around when Ozark is all wrapped up, I’d love to do it. But who knows, they might put a different director on it before then. We’ll see. Unfortunately my ability to direct features really kind of—there’s a certain size of a film that I just can’t qualify for [right now] because of the amount of time that I’m able to give in prep, in shooting, and in post.”
Bummer.
The 1985 version begins at a dinner party hosted by Mr. Boddy, where he admits to blackmailing his visitors. These guests, who have been given aliases, are Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), Mr. Green (Michael McKean), professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) and Col. Mustard (Martin Mull). When Boddy turns up murdered, all are suspects, and together they try to figure out who is the killer.
