Rian Johnson Will (Probably) Never Make A (Straight) Horror Movie

Well, it looks like Looper and Knives Out director Rian Johnson will (probably) never make a horror movie. Why not, you ask? Turns out he’s not grounded emotionally in the genre.

Johnson tells Film Independent‘s Coffee Talks: “To be honest, it’s a genre that, because my family was really religious when I was growing up, I wasn’t allowed to see a lot of intense stuff. It’s not a genre I have a grounding in emotionally. A lot of friends like [Kusama] included are incredible filmmakers who engage with this genre and make movies that just amaze me. It’s not something that, for whatever reason, has drawn me.”

So I guess this means the closest we’ll ever get to a straight Rian Johnson horror movie will be his killer time-travel action-thriller Looper with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis.

Fine by me.

Looper takes place in a future society where time-travel exists, but it’s only available to those with the means to pay for it on the black market. When the mob wants to eliminate someone, it sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a looper lies in wait to finish the job. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such hired gun, and he does his job well — until the day his bosses decide to “close the loop” and send Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) back in time to be killed.

Rated R for strong violence, language, some sexuality/nudity, and drug content, the film sports a 93% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: As thought-provoking as it is thrilling, Looper delivers an uncommonly smart, bravely original blend of futuristic sci-fi and good old-fashioned action.
