The show is one of the first television projects set up at HBO Max under Abrams’ and Bad Robot’s mega-deal with WarnerMedia that was unveiled in September 2019.

Kevin Reilly, chief content officer of HBO Max said: “What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie [McGrath]. What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

Justice League Dark consists of the more supernatural members of the DC Universe, handling situations deemed outside the scope of the traditional Justice League. The team originally featured John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna.

At one point in time, Crimson Peak and Blade 2 director Guillermo del Toro was working on a live-action Justice League Dark film titled Heaven Sent featuring Constantine, Deadman, the Spectre, Swamp Thing, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, Zatara, Sargon the Sorcerer, and Etrigan the Demon. Then it was announced that Doug Liman would direct with del Toro and Scott Rudin producing and Michael Gilio writing. Obviously, neither version made it to the screen.
