This Day in Horror History: IDLE HANDS Was Unleashed in 1999

On this day in horror history, Rodman Flender’s cult classic horror-comedy Idle Hands with Devon Sawa, Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba, and Vivica A. Fox was unleashed in 1999.

It begins when slacker teen Anton Tobias has his right hand possessed by a demonic force, he finds that his life gets a lot more interesting. While Anton himself is an amiable guy, his hand proves to be an appendage of death, killing his two best buddies, Pnub and Mick, who return to life as wisecracking zombies. In addition to murdering those closest to him, Anton’s evil hand significantly hinders his chances with a lovely neighbor Molly.

Rated R for horror violence and gore, pervasive teen drug use, language, and sexuality, it sports a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes with this Critics Consensus: An uneasy mix of slapstick and gore, Idle Hands lacks the manic energy and comedic inspiration required to pull off its goofy premise.

Trivia:

The hand is played by magician Christopher Hart who also did Thing in Addams Family (1991)

Filmed in the same neighborhood as Halloween (1978). The school gym where the Halloween dance is held is the same gym used for the gym in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Jawbreaker.

Jack Noseworthy (Randy) and Katie Wright (Tanya) did not know they were half-siblings until they met on the set of this movie.

Randy has the same “weeping Jesus” tattoo as Mickey from Natural Born Killers.

The film was delayed in its release because of the Columbine massacre.

The video clips Anton and his friends watch include Rob Zombie’s Dragula, Night of the Living Dead, and Dawn of the Dead.

Jessica Alba was 17 when the movie was made.

Rodman Flender got the job after two other directors dropped out.

The Blink-182 guitarist Thomas DeLonge plays the drive-thru employee wearing a safari hat and The Offspring is the band performing at the Halloween dance. The two songs that The Offspring performs at the concert are “I Wanna Be Sedated” (originally by The Ramones) and “Beheaded”.
