Neil Gaiman Wants Trans Writers For Netflix’s THE SANDMAN
Looks like Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman is coming along nicely and will be ready to roll once all of this Coronavirus business is over and done with.
Recently, Gaiman (Coraline, American Gods) spoke about the upcoming series with writer Nora K. Jemisin, where they discussed the character of Wanda, a trans woman from the “A Game of You” arc. A rare example of a trans person in 1993, Gaiman based her on his real-life trans friends and is conscious of getting her right, wanting the trans community to be in the writer’s room:
He says: “My biggest request to the Sandman showrunner for when we get to the season with ‘Game of You’ in it is that we have trans men and trans women in the writers’ room. Not as consultants, but as writers. The biggest difference now is that I would have [trans people] write it. I wouldn’t be writing that. At the time, I looked around and didn’t see those writers. … I’m so fascinated to see what a trans writers’ room, what stories they would tell with those characters.”

Personally, I’m excited to hear that this is the way Gaiman wants to go with his upcoming Netflix series. Not to get into my personal life too much here and now, but someone very close to me is transgender and so the thought of her being truly represented on such as (sure-to-be) hit series is music to my ears. Gaiman recently responded to a fan asking about the show’s current status, saying: “It’s going really well, except it’s kind of hibernating right now until people start making TV again. The scripts for the first season are written, casting had started, directors hired, sets were being built. Everything was ready to go into production, and then we moved into a pause. As soon as the world is ready to make TV drama, Sandman will move smoothly back into being made. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to get the scripts as good as we can.”
