The Raven Comes up Po’ at the Box OfficeBad news for Hollywood as this weekend’s box office is poised to go down as one of the worst of 2012. The news was even worse for the star of the movie 2012; John Cusak’s Edgar Allan Poe chiller The Raven had a po’ showing at the box office.

Not too many people chose to quote The Raven this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the Relativity Pictures acquisition opened in 7th place with a lackluster $7.2 million. From the director of V for Vendetta comes “F for Flop”.

Compare The Raven‘s uneventful opening to The Hunger Games, a movie in its 6th week that still finished higher in 4th place with $11.2 million. It has taken in $372 million, and that’s just the domestic total. Add in its international money, and The Hunger Games has now grossed more than $600 million worldwide.

Cabin in the Woods looks to be ending its theatrical run with a third week 10th place finish and another $4.7 million. That brings it up to $34 million. No word yet from “Fornicus: God of Pain and Bondage” whether this sum pleases him.

This weekend’s doldrums end next weekend when the summer movie season officially begins as The Avengers opens to a guaranteed gajillion dollars. Horror will return to the box office in a big way the following week with the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp comedic redux of Dark Shadows that looks like it could be a real box office wild card.
