Newly Discovered Giant Indonesian “Sea Cockroach” Belongs in a Horror Movie
In Underwater (released last January) the crew of a miles-deep drilling operation face-off against legions of otherworldly creatures. Still, a newly discovered “Sea Cockroach” from Indonesia puts fictional underwater creepers to shame (well, except maybe for that last one…). Seriously, the sucker is almost too scary to look at!

In a 2018 expedition to survey uncharted waters off the southern coast of West Java, Indonesia, a team of researchers made some very peculiar findings. But fast forward to 2020, the team has officially confirmed the identification of another new species: Bathynomus raksasa.
According to the Natural History Museum of London, the size of the giant isopod is attributed to the lack of natural predators in their deep-sea habitat, allowing them to grow larger than one would normally expect of other sea creatures.
